Challenge

An unnamed security company closed a round of funding and needed to quickly create the 1.0 version of their product.
They had conceptual mockups for pitch materials, but needed a validated product design before engineering could build it.

Approach

We conducted a 1-week design sprint in Nashville with the team to rapidly understand their niche security space, define the customer problem, ideate and sketch solutions, build a high-fidelity prototype, and test it with 5 target users.

Day 1 – Research and Scoping

On Monday, we went through exercises to find the key challenges of the project to tackle first in this initial sprint. To get the ball rolling and create a foundation for the project, we each sketched several potential solutions to our challenge.

Defining every problem before solving one of them

Day 2 – Storyboarding the Prototype

On Tuesday, we spent time reviewing and voting on the great concept solutions we each sketched, and made decisions on which ideas and concepts we want to experiment with to solve our challenge. Once we made a decision, we created a detailed storyboard for the prototype.

Day 3 – Reviewing the Prototype Design

On Wednesday, the prototyping team bent time and space to create a high-fidelity prototype in only one day and planned out the interviews for Thursday.

Day 4 – User Testing

On Thursday, we tested the prototype with 5 users. We knew it would be a challenge to get people on short notice to donate their time, but their team found awesome people with great insights. During each interview, the entire sprint team wrote insights on stickies for the insights wall. Every interviewee was a goldmine of feedback to guide our iterations!

Results

In just 4 days, we went from concept to a user-tested prototype, establishing a strong foundation for the product. Immediately after the sprint, we began an ongoing engagement with the security client to iterate and design the 1.0 product for customer delivery.

"Working with Sodium Halogen has been fantastic! We were able to take a rough idea of what we wanted to do with our product and take it from all our concepts to an actual prototype - in a compressed design sprint week.

It would have taken us months to have done that on our own. Fantastic."
